I am starting to prepare a list of people's postal addresses for my exhibition mailout. Apart from inviting all your family and friends, and peer artist friends and arts organisations and bodies, who else do you invite? Because everyone I am inviting are mostly artists or arts workers and are not necessarily the target market for buyers.

Do you invite people you don't even know? Do you randomly select business workers such as Lawyers, Banks or Doctors for example.

What about inviting acquaintances of these services e.g. your doctor, your dentist, your mortgage broker, your hairdresser etc etc. So people you know, have had contact with but not necessarily people you communicate with often?

Thoughts and suggestions...

Definitely invite these people. It's amazing how often people outside of your 'art circles' are fascinated to realise you are an artist and that they know an artist. For people who don't go to openings it can be very appealling.
Where you think appropriate include a little hand written note.

Hi Chrissy,

I have just started to send out all my invitations and I at this stage don't have a lot of art friends, this is my first exhibition.
I have sent the invites out to family and friends who I have given a number of invitations to as they have friends and extended family that may be interested, I placed an event in Facebook and left it open to all friends on my page. I have left a stack of invites at various shops I frequent such as the local butcher and bottle shop as have gotten to know the staff over the years; I have sent them to various work colleagues some of which have asked for more than one invite if they think a friend of theirs enjoys art.
You just never know where they will end up but they may end up with just the right people in the end.

another tip: If it is appropriate - and depending on the venue it may not be e.g. at a commercial gallery it wouldn't be, but a self funded exhibiton it would.

Get a guestbook or else use a clipboard with printed sheets headed 'Mailing List' with columns for name, email address, address. That way you can capture those friends of friends and family who aren't already on your list and other people who happen upon your exhibition.
Put it near the catalogue/price list / artist information with a pen (and a spare). That way you can build your mailing list for your next show.
