This from the inside cover of Tuesdays "The West Australian" newspaper here in Perth
The joint winner of the 2008 Perth Royal agricultural show open art competition has been called out by WA Newqspapers' Inside cover

this painting of hers :
http://www.mirellapicaart.com/
http://www.perthroyalshow.com.au/competitions/showcasing-champions/open-art/

is an almost exact copy of a piece done by the newspapers resident artist Don Lindsay from the year before ( his had birds on the power lines and colours slightly different ) I cant find a link online to the original work

"Inside Cover" called the RAS and it took them two days to admit that there might be a problem, eventually saying that they'll ask the committee that oversees the competition to investigate.
RAS has said they may strip her of the award ( not holding my breath ) but refused to answer questions about compensation to the original artist ( in the papers employ ) or whether they'd ask for the prize money back ( doubt that aswell )

the artist ofcourse , is unreachable but still has the gall to proudly display the work on the front page of her website, despite it being found out to be a (bad) copy of someone elses work

the funny thing is :
the first prize for the competition each year is sponsored by the very paper from where she ripped the work off, hah

Personally I'd like to see her stripped of her award, the prize money taken from her and given to Don Lindsay, her banned from entering again and all the artists that entered that year be refunded their entry fee ( or given free entry next time they enter )

its completely typical of the organisers of this competition to pass the buck, stall and blabber out rubbish like "oh we'll investigate that , that may possibly turn out to probably be a problem we could maybe investigate" hang up the phone and go and have another cutp of tea

the credibility of this show must now be in question, but being WA artists have so few options that they have to enter shows like this , despite the pathetic judging / curating / lack of care

the credibility of the "artist" though ...

a bit harsh of me I suppose, but I hope this ruins her career

Oh my Rolling Eyes

I can't believe that person's work has won anything.

Even her signature smacks of plagiarism!

Unfortunately this sort of thing happens quite frequently in shows -the recent Wynne Prize, and American Watercolour Society show a couple of years back are some examples.
Mostly the show organisers move with glacial sped on the matter, and if they ever do anything they never inform the public or other entrants. Often they are severely embarrassed by the inadequacy of the judging, but they will never, ever admit that.
I do not enter many shows at all these days, I have become increasingly disillusioned by the whole thing.

Plagiarism aside, it is a shockingly inadequate painting and not deserving of a win.
Rubbish painting shouldn't be rewarded, and if a judge can't see when a painting (or other art object) is appalling they quite simply shouldn't be judging

I sent the RAS a nice long polite email explaining why I think they need to do something about it

no doubt they'll ignore it and just take my entry fee and knock back my painting this year in response

yay Perth art scene !

At first I thought the winning painting was not as bad as the comments made it sound. though I straight away noticed the 'familiar' signature she has/uses. So I went back to her site to have another look at her gallery. 10 years of painting! Gosh Shocked Good on her for self belief eh? Laughing
