Hi Everyone...
I just wanted to mention a cool product that I only recently discovered. It's called Metal Clay if you are in jewellery making or really even sculpture you should try this stuff.
Bacically you can mold this soft clay like substance into a shape, and then let it dry, it drys hard so you can then sculpt it more if you want, then you just bake it, or torch it... its very easy, and you are then left with nothing but real silver! ...it cuts out the whole casting process!
I've very curious if any jewellers have tried this product, and what do you think?
If you want more information or want to buy some, please visit this link: [ Silver Clay ] (they have supported ART-search by paying for a listing btw) Their website has step by step demonstrations of it online.

I've only recently discovered metal clay (in particular Art Clay) and I am THRILLED with the results.
It took a fair bit of cash for the set up costs (investing in a fire brick, needle files, carving tools, rolling plastic, non stick sheets, the clay itself, texture sheets, steel brush, oil paste, silver paste, all the rest!) but seeing as they are one off payments I could feel pretty comfortable about it.
I use a butane torch for firing, and a hairdryer for drying, but you can use a gas stove to fire it, and you can leave it to dry overnight if you wish. (I have found better results with leaving it overnight, you don't get that firescale on it from the quick changing of temperature). But I'm very impatient! (An impatient artist? NEVER!)
I started off small, just doing a leaf pendant, and it worked out great. Just be conscious of how quick it is! Once you're firing and its bright red and glowing and it looks like all the clay has burnt off, STOP! I went on for a little longer and it started to melt the silver and I lost the leaf detail I carved in the unfired clay. Luckily I could file it in later, but it was definately more work.
Jees, I went on a bit there. Sorry! I am just so excited! |

| Thats interesting, but does it really lead to pure silver as claimed by thread starter? |
