One of my current jobs is to design a book cover for a book about petrol sniffing in Indigenous communities. (My first, flippant, thought was - "Petrol Sniffing for Beginners"... or is this for advanced users?") So of course, I hop on the net to do some research*
This came up - you have to hand it to Google Adsense for context-sensitivity, although they don't do so well for sensitivity-sensitivity.
Cheers
Grant
*my wife is convinced this is a euphemism for 'looking at porn'. Unless I'm working on an escort agency or 'mens club' in which case it IS research. |

That is shocking!!
You could title the book... 'would you like unleaded with that?'
or... 'snuffing out the sniffing habit'... |

It is really sad
My son was a cop in remote WA and the problem was endemic, not much has changed. OPAL petrol reduced the sniffing but they just found alternatives to get off their faces. Paint or solvents give much the same effect.
Many aboriginals were also dying at young ages due to fetal alcohol syndrome causing serious defects in vital organs.
they would just drop dead from heart attacks or some organ failure.
It is a generational problem with no quick fix like politicians want. |

I haven't really started on the book yet, but my understanding is that it's a good news story. I gather it's about a particular community which decided to tackle the problem their own way, with encouraging results. The author got an AOM for his work.
Where I live in Melbourne is a very long way from the problems of the NT. Our council built a stone circle, complete with Koori flag near Modialloc Creek where they used to camp traditionally (we think). We said Sorry along with everybody else and agree their situation is inexcusable. Which is fairly easy when there are no indigenous Australians left in our area...
Cheers

There is a large population in the ton near here , where I live.
There are a couple who may be rowdy ( as with every community of any race) and I dont know how the whole 'sorry' thing went.
I went to a grants writing meeting to learn about applying for a grant to have an exhibition of aboriginal portraits , to show a personal side to the whole situation.
Alot of the population ,even in our area, really only know what the media has portrayed, not the individuals..... but one day .....
It is funny the Mordialoc council did that... I am positive the funds could have said sorry alot better by upgrading a medical center or school.... |
