In my opinion Aussie artists past and present can hold their own with any in the world: Tom Roberts (my favorite), Frederick McCubbin, Sydney Long, George Lambert, Rupert Bunny. Robert Hannaford is my favorite portrait painter.

In my opinion the best artists from New Zealand are:

Nathanael Provis
Paul Cato
Tim Wilson (my favourite)

Technically Raphaella Spence is the best living artist not from Australia.

Do others agree?

I was thinking of the 'American Impressionism and Realism' exhibition. The Australian works were much better.

I recently flew to Canberra to see the big French Masters exhibition and thought it was great. However, the highlight of the visit to the NGA was upstairs looking through the Australian stuff by Streeton, Roberts, et.al. Personally I thought that the Australian works were better.
