I cannot find a copy online and all my books are in storage but there is a wonderful mapplethorpe that was in the Australian exhibition.

It is called "the cock and the devil" and features a bronze sculpture of a devil with trident looking like a pickle fork about to stab a large mapplethorpe penis Shocked

It was one of Margo's and my favorite images of the exhibition.

I saw the exhibition in Sydney and was just amazed at his work ( even if much of the skill belonged to the man who did the superb printing of his photos. Robert never worked in a darkroom if he could avoid it ! )

His work was really confronting! I remember liking the images though.
At that age I was to shy to look at the nudity, maybe I was just shy of being caught looking at the nudity! Laughing
I cant remember anything like that. Maybe because we were students they didnt show us everything!
Our teacher gave us alot to look at in books, but it wasnt like seeing the real thing.
I think it was in 1990 or 91.

Someones photography I admired also was Diane Arbus, the nudist colony photos and the fat camp ones were inspiring.

We saw some Picasso sketches at the GOMA in Brisbane there was a school group going through at the time. the sketches were pretty graphic of prostitutes, as one of the teenagers said " If I drew that in class I would get expelled!" Smile

Our teacher would have let us draw or make anything ( she was the one who took us to Mapplethorpe) she failed me for totally different reasons!!

All these years later, I understand the fail I got ( was altered to a B+ at the external assesment) and she has become a friend!

I would love to see the Picasso stuff!

Some might find a Banana and a couple of fuzzy apricots arranged symetrically quite offensive!!
The same people probably blush when they see a raw , naked chicken whole!! Laughing

Maybe they get dressed in the dark also!! Laughing

I once had two wooden hemispheres on my desk and the boss called me in his office. I am still surprised of his imagination.

[quote="petesteyn"] What struck me was most of the works depicted women in various states of undress. I think showing women naked is a disgrace to them."
Well Peter from Dubbo which is it to be? Various states of undress which you say "struck you the most" or "naked women"?
