Hey guys, new here. Ive always been fascinated by this type of art but I haven't been able to find much published it. I'm new to painting and I want to pursue this style but I'm not sure whether to go with acrylics or oils and what mediums. Some use oil on coldwax (not sure what coldwax even looks like), some use acrylic on plywood.
If you guys could tell me what you think this artist uses and point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

Texture pastes and moulding mediums, texture additives added to acrylic paint etc, will all give this effect when painted over...
The base as you mantioned can be ply wood, MDF or canvas boards, or stretched canvas. (Canvas stretched and stapled around a wooden frame) The stretched canvas are the most popular way to go with this sort of art.
Dont worry to much about the mediums if you are just starting out, just get a couple and try them.
The wooden bases are good to practice with.
You can buy the stretched canvas and boards at any art supply place, you can even buy them at $2.00 shops and the Warehouse etc... Price and quality differ.
Check out some of the other threads on the forum, there is alot to be learned!
Good luck and welcome to the forum.! |

| So if I wanted to just start experimenting with colors to get these golden, silver, and deep shades, you're saying do acrylic? Because I've always been attracted to the look and opacity of oil, and I can find some great deals on Windsors. |

I am only familiar with acrylic paint as that is all i have used, other than pastel and watercolour.
I dont see why you couldnt use oil, it will just take longer to dry, and clean up of brushes is different. |
