Hi All After a fruitless 90mins on google I have only found 1 company and they didn't have prices (hate that, what's the bloody secret?) but are sending me a quote! Does anyone know where I can get them?

Hi Jo Presuming that you mean the ones without a perspex cover, plinths are usually made to order from carpenters, or in the case of galleries, preparators. You can expect to pay around $200 + for a standard size (about hip height) white painted plinth. I know people in both Sydney and Melbourne that you could talk to if the above sounds like what you are hunting for. If you mean the ones that hve a clear cover (known as a vitrine), then you are up for rather a bit more cashola. Cheers M

Thanks M Gallery plinths are what I'm after, $200+ for a box!! That's ridiculous!! I might have to get my brother onto this one I thought if I could get them readily it would save some bother.

The reason that they want $200 for a plinth is mainly the labour and paint cost ( which would be sprayed on). I googled display plinths and heaps came up. http://www.thefineartcompany.co.uk/plinths/plinths.htm These are made from 18mm MDF and professionally painted, so you can continually wipe handmarks off without destoying the look of the paint. They would be pretty heavy but I suppose you need them to be that way. I think MDF would hold screws more securely than Melamine, but Melamine is pre painted with good quality paint as well and that's a pretty good advantage over MDF.

One of our clients does shopping centre display fit-outs. I had a quick look at some of their suppliers but couldn't see any plinths as such - the units are usually custom designed and manufactured out of MDF with 2-Pak paint. It may be worth thinking outside the square a bit - most kitchen design companies also work in 2-pak over MDF and may be better geared up for a small run like yours. Also, it may be worth considering some of the aluminium display systems such as Octanorm (www.octanorm.com.au) or Click (www.clicksystems.com.au) - they don't sell plinths specifically, but the systems can be configured to build just about anything, although they are not cheap... Do you want them for a specific event or permanently. If only temporary check out the TAFE and Artspace. Maybe if they are not being used they might hire/ lend you some.

Thanks everyone, I want them on a permanent basis Belle but thankyou for the tip, I've only googled Australia Daniel, the shipping alone would be out of my price range, I did get alot of sites but many were for expo's etc and few pics and no prices. Will have to make them I think, thanks Grant and Steve for the tips.

Actually I wasn't suggesting that you have them sent from England...I thought that you might fly over there and bring them back. Or you could fly over and strap them together and row them back and only pay a one way fare.

Does anyone know where I can get them? I have two custom made display plinths I'd like to sell, If it interest you... they are also designed in such a way that they can be joined back to back as one. They were made for me, used one and I have no real use for them anymore.

Hi, My uncle in Sydney makes plinths to order, and does a very nice job. He specialises in plinths used by sculptors for exhibitions, and also gets orders from galleries. I've no idea what his prices are like but you can assess that for yourself. If you send me a message I can put you in touch with him if you wish. Ian.

I'd describe them as large, they are approximately 'rib height' about 1.4m tall I guess... then square sizes each face approx 45cm wide. They are hollow, so you can store stuff in them or transport smaller plinths inside them, they have a handle hole at the base rear to help move them, and as mentioned they can go back to back to make one plinth. They also have architrave timber around the base, which could be easily removed if desired. They are painted white, they were only used one so are in pretty good condition. From memory I paid $350 each, or was it $350 for both, I'm not sure. I paid a carpenter friend to make them... Anyways, I have no real use for them and doubt I'll use them again so happy with nay fair price. If you are interested, please email me on buchel@buchel.com and I can measure exactly or pull them out of storage and photograph them. Brad.
