Giving artwork as a gift is always a tricky business, unless you know clearly that the person is a collector and will take anything. (such as myself). Being seen as a good mother-in-law is also an uphill battle.
Let's assume for a moment that you were giving your painting to the Outsiders Festival - the gift would have been very much appreciated, you would have continued to be seen as a great friend and your daughter-in-law might have suggested she would like to have one of your pieces.
Food for thought - based on experience.

Thanks, I did think afterwards that I should have given it to you, as I was sure it would have been appreciated, but she does collect dolphins.
Being a mother-in-law sure is an uphill battle, I guess I have read to many bad M-I-L jokes, & perhaps I'm trying too hard, & I now feel from my experience that there should be some daughter-in-law jokes also.

I myself had a great relationship with my M-I-L, I was probably closer to her than my own mother, & I had hoped for the same with this one.
