Ive just used the matise background colour on a canvas but it looks really chalky,
could I paint over this with sealer before starting on my portrait or would I be better off just painting the background again using normal paints???? |

I'm not quite sure what you mean by '' looks chalky'', but you can put what ever you like ( sealer, paint or gesso) over it as long as it contains acrylic polymer they will combine OK.

| thanks tango, I guess its the gesso in the paint that to me gives it a chalky or powery look. |

By 'chalky' do you mean extremely matt?
There are some background colours (especially dark ones) that have gone powdery looking with white streaks after sealing them with acrylic artists varnishes... I dont know if this is what you mean...
Good luck though! |

not really just mean that the finish to me looks a bit on the powdery side, doesnt feel like it to touch but to me looks that way.
wondered if I sealed it with a sealer before painting if it would prevent a problem later on when I started painting over the background |
