Thanks for all the kind remarks.. in fact, I've found it's very hard to match the exposure between the two shots, so we're not really comparing apples with apples, here....
With all my work in progress, I protect them with a sheet of tracing paper stuck over the top. This one is interesting in that through the tracing paper it looks better.... that tells me something.
I reckon I can sell this to somebody with bad eyesight, or after a few drinks....
Cheers

Thanks for the welcome Pearl .. I hope you are all a lot warmer than we are in Scotland. It is freezing here and we had snow last night... very pretty though.
The more I look at your painting Grant the more I like it, I am sure a lot of work went into this and it has paid off.... |

Thanks Rachelle - the fur is done by putting a light wash over most of the cat, then painting a lot of little hairs with masking fluid. Then putting a darker wash on, and masking more hairs. Repeat about 4 times. The idea is to get hairs that vary slightly in tone. It would have been better if they were thinner, but that was as thin as I could get with the very expensive brand of masking fluid I use (Schminke). Since then, I've found another brand that is about 1/4 the price that works better... (National Art Materials).
It's currently hanging over this computer, so I'm looking at it now and I'm still not really hppy with it. Sigh.
Cheers

I have read all the responses including your own and how you feel about this painting at this stage.
IMO ...it has so much good going for it that it would be hard to "let it go" I have felt this about my own paintings ...it's a real dilemna!
Perhaps put it away for a time , then bring it out and look at it more objectively. I find it is easier to make a decision if there is some space and time between me and the painting.
I really love how you have depicted the cat and the surrounds...this "pose" is so typical of cats. Maybe the area under the neck and down the body could be lighter...even if you have to use a bit of gouache for the light furry bits.
Best wishes Sandy |
