I had an interesting chat with a supplier of an acrylic polymer paint called Hydrocryl the other day.
He rattled off a very impressive list of current and past painters (including Howard Arkley) that use this brand. It sounds and looks excellent. I was wondering if anyone has used it in the past?
Having just made the switch from acrylics to oils, I'm a little hesitant, but it's FDA aproved - which from a health point of view is impressive - plus retarder would make it work like oils. Am yet to give it a go.
Anyone have any experience with it? |

Hi Michelle,
I've never heard of Hydrocryl do they have a website? as we don't have them listed in the Artists Paints category of www.art-search.com and I can't find them online? ...if you try it can you let us all know what it's like?
There is a new Artists acrylic paint, called Atelier Interactive that has an open drying time that you can control, you can paint in a similar fashion to oils but completely control drying time, you can also revive dry paint to a wet painting surface easily! I've tried it recently and was pretty impressed. If you normally paint in acrylics but are moving to oils, you may like give Atelier Interactive a go and let us all know how you find it.
They have an info sheet here that explains it better than I can:

Thanks for that Brad!
I was using their interactive but didn't know they had a retarder.
The thing that impressed me about the Hydrocryl was that it apparently has a much greater pigment loading than other brands. The fellow was pretty persuasive - though their literature isn't as well worded.
Something that has such a great pigment loading is worth exploring, but I would love to know if anyone else has used it.
He showed me a painting that was painted 20 years ago - it was a lovely piece and looked fresh, though it was obvious from the framing that it wasn'ty recent. Apparently you can roll a painting up for 10 years or more and it won't flake or become brittle.
I'll report back...... |

Hi Michelle,
this website is a very interesting read indeed ... will keep an eye on this one, but I've just switched to Atelier Interactive.
Thanks |
