In the course of collecting art, one cannot zero in on that "perfect work" of a particular artist unless one is able to see an array of works either in an exhibition, collection, gallery or at least a catalogue. I am particularly piqued at the state of disorganization that one confronts in the Indian art market. There are some excellect works out there that need to be brought to the world stage.
Artists are by nature a curious and "not-very-normal" lot, and when one considers the possibility of dealing with them directly it can be daunting. Joe Nambiar, or as he spells it -Jo Nambiar, has some excellent works to his credit. Two of them adorn Bollywood celebrity homes in Mumbai. Others lie in nondescriptive locations that takes too much pain to travel in that country for a viewing. However I wore my soles out only because I knew what I would see would be worth it.
Not a gallery in India has a work done by this artist. None are at present available for sale. There is no publication or catalogue carrying this man's name or a collection of his work. How does one buy a painting done by him? Has anyone any ideas to offer?
I am impressed by his style. It has all the qualities of a great painter. It is the kind of perfect work I would invest in. But there appears to be no inroads into this man's work. I have seen the works of M F Hussain, Ganesh Pyne, Tyeb Mehta, S H Raza, F N Souza, Manjit Bawa and a host of others.
I would still wish to invest in a Jo nambiar work if I can find one. |

Well, if green bottles were beetles, and flew away home, would their dung turn to gold and spurt forth little, weeny middle eastern men travelling via levitating rugs, or could we suppose the nose hairs of elderly Hindus support a plethora of minute life which may, or may not, include malevolent fairies with appalling taste in shoes? Argh , did anyone else hear that? Shhh. I told you the manacles might cut in. Don't eat the pink ones. |

| Who cares about Jo Nambiar? I can assure you that the work of the people in this forum is readily available. Good investment too. |

And why is 'Cynthia Rockfeller' posting this post on forums all over the place?
Methinks someone is working on building someone a bit of a profile. |

| Can we counter that by loudly and widely proclaiming how BAD the paintings of Jo Nambairs are that we all have in our collections ? |

Better still, lets all proclaim how terrible they are that we DON'T own any, and DON'T WANT any to contaminate our collections.
My dear Cynthia Rockfeller, I don't know much about Indian artists. The one I've heard of, one the world proclaims the best is an old man called MF Hussain whose paintings have sold at a fair price at major auctions. And he's no great dude either compared to the rest of the world. To compare Jo Nambiar's paintings to MF is a tall order indeed when, as you proclaim, there are none around to be viewed.
I may sound like I'm sitting on a fence, but in the (unlikely) event that Jo's paintings really hit the big auctions, I am ready to pay a price for the Jo Nambiar piece which I suspect you possess. A bad buy, girl! You are not likely to ever sell that one by blowing hot air around an unknown artist.
Thats what you're doing aren't you ? |
