have been going to byron for nearly 20 years and it has really changed. i used to make a range of 100% Australian giftware that I sold there (at Aspidistra) but sadly I got squeezed brutally price-wise by imported stuff (made in China, of course) so I shut down, went travelling:) The place has become very commercial in a lot of ways but the old byron is there if you know what to look for! hey I live at the Gold Coast, so I know commercial when I see it!! (hehehe)
byron is still great if you can avoid the crowds, or indeed if you actually like crowds. heaps of walking and little out of the way spots to get 'lost' not to mention the diving and bands (and good pizza) at the Great Northern. the thai restaurant in the alley behind the beachhotel is great and some really nice galleries selling quality work. the markets are great too...
Bangalow is a great little arty town with a market, just south-west of Byron. well worth a look too. and then there's Lennox...oh I could go on and on and on... |
