Hello,

I have an idea to set up a charity event that would showcase new and emerging artists in Tasmania . (As well as established artists)

Arts Tasmania are happy to help and advise, but I need to find a group of artists to work with to create somthing. I'm thinking we could involve a Tasmanian charity to help with publicity and then maybe venues may give us a place to exhibit for free.

What do you think about the idea? Crap or good?

I am running an exhibition for charity.

Did It cost me anything? No I simply added 30% to all my work which would be donated to the charity if sold.

How did I secure a venue? As it was in aid of charity a trendy bar said I could have their funtion room for free (Good advertising for them and extra customers) I asked if they had wheelchair access - it is shamefull not to have this in the UK. So they let me have the whole bar downstairs too! Their PR department designed and paid for all the postcards baring my name - again it didn't cost me.

Exposure? A big spread in a tabloid paper at the start of the event and another after the private viewing. We raised £200 ($400) and I sold 2 painting's. Two days later I sold another and one guest was from London and went to my London exhibition and bought one their. The bar surprised us all with 20% discount on food for the rest of the month.

Art for charity? Well why not. It didn't cost me anything and all parties benifitted. Easy as piss! The opening night was packed!

Sorry must have missed the original post somehow. When I get time I'll have a closer look at what it says, a bit tired and unwell for thinking tonight. Our local gallery has done charity auctions.

Shout louder! I can do that!

I recon I should have posted this in the main section. Perhaps I should open this opportunity to all Australians from all states?

I've just set up a blog (Is that louder at the back there?)

http://art4charity.blogspot.com

You don't have to register to post your comments - I've opened it to all. You can also remain annoymous if you wish. I just want to get some ideas bouncing and generate interest. You don't have to be an artist to get involved.

Hi Donna,
I think you've got some interesting ideas there.
I got involved in a couple of on-line art auctions for Coral Reef Research back in the early 90's before everyone had computers and ebay was just a twinkle in it's creators eye...and they sold the work online easily.
I tend to just donate an artwork to charity, and they do some kind of fundraising, but the publicity gained is only momentary.
Your ideas sound more sustainable for the artist.
Cheers, Dave

Happy New Year. I posted a note about this project on the NOISE forum and they kindly put it on their main page......Someone has faith in my idea!! I hope I won't be in trouble for posting this (The UK art forum are very strict) but I thought you would like to have a read.........

COLLABORATION CALL-OUT

18:12:07 | 14.09
NOISE artist Evanga is calling out for Tassie artists with ideas to contribute to Art4Charity, a project she first started in the UK but is now extending to the Apple Isle (aka Tasmania).

Evanga (aka Donna Vokes) says: "In the space of 6 months I secured 6 exhibitions for myself and would be happy to share a group exhibition with you in Hobart and in the UK or to simply help yourselves set up in your arts career. I am not driven by money, but by the simple act of creating artwork and creating opportunities for others. Are you a Tasmanian Artist interested in working with me? I have several ideas for projects that could happen, but first I would like to share them with you so we can talk about the possibilities before committing ourselves to anything. I have set up this blog dedicated to this where we can chat freely about how we could help each other."

It sounds like a great idea - we'd love to hear of any exhibitions or outcomes that result from NOISE artists getting together to help promote themselves and generate donations for worthy causes.

Do you have an idea that needs many minds to blossom? Do you have a project, a space, a concept that you'd like to share with NOISE artists everywhere? Update your artist news now!

Thank you Dave for your comment and sharing with us about what you've done for charity. I understand that the publicity gained through auctions is only momentary. I just want to do somthing different to an auction. Somthing more creative. Yes they work and people are still going along, but I personally want to organise and set up somthing myself in the hope that the publicity will go further. I want to excite people and involve a group of people....easy said than done I know!

Can I put your name down Dave? Perhaps you could help in generating interest in Tassie? Of course you are not comitted to anything. Thank you again for your support.

Happy New Year to you as well Evanga.
Sadly I'm a long way from Tassie, I am based in Sydney, haven't been to Tasmania in 20 years.... Crying or Very sad
But you are right, you have to think of fresh ideas, to use a recent cliche "think outside the box".

Hi Evenga,

Maybe you could hand out some Art Forum stickers at your event... and maybe link to art forum from your blog too. Art Forum is here to support you and if you are able to mention it personally to more people in Tasmania it should spread and you'll then always have an active group of Tasmanian's always at the ready when you post in Art Forum.

Good on you for setting up this event, its really good of you and I hope it all goes well please keep us informed; we are reading. Smile

Kind Regards,
Brad Buchel

Hi Brad and Dave,

Sorry I didn’t see you there Brad. I can certainly hand out Art Forum stickers and will certainly link you to the blog (Let me find out how to do this first!) I will defiantly link you from my www.evangastudios.co.uk website! (Don’t ask how many blogs and websites I have!) Art Forum Australia is the best art forum I have come across. It is better than the UK forum and not as strict. It’s so nice to hear that you are here to support me too (I sometimes wonder of the other forums) Very Happy Thanks for your advice Brad. I should mention now that I am also considering doing something mainland as well, just incase nothing comes of Tasmania. I will keep you updated with my progress and look forward to involving you.

Thanks Dave for posting on my blog. I nearly fell off my chair Shocked as I didn’t think any one took much notice of me! It really made my day! Thanks for pointing out that the art market is very fickle and grungy fashion artwork is coming out. It’s always good to hear from those who have been in the arts industry and have experience working in one since I am only 24.
I haven’t been to Sydney. I am branching out from my original idea of doing something in Tasmania as I am finding it hard getting a charity interested (You’d think they didn’t need the money) and local artists. I am opening the project to all of Australia. I only decided on Tasmania because I lived there and I know the state well, but also love Brisbane and Melbourne. My next stop is definitely Sydney so you’ll have to let me know where I can see your work. (have you got a website by the way)

If anyone is interested in getting involved with me in my Aussie project, please let me know (Even if it’s just to throw some ideas around) I am contacting some arts organisations (Sorry I didn’t think of you Brad) today to see if they can help. I have another blog here http://art4charity.blogspot.com where I have talked more about this and I‘ve thrown in some ideas I have.

Chat soon!

Evanga - a group of Bridport Artists just raised $3,000 for the Clifford Craig Medical Trust with an exhibition they have every year in the first week of the year. Perhaps they may be interested in a Southern exhibition along similar lines.

Wink Hello The Pook. That’s a good idea to ask if Bridport Artists would be interested. I’ll google them and see what I come up with. I’ll keep you posted!

Very Happy WAHAY I have managed to hook one artist in Sydney. Hello Kim, Great to hear from you. I certainly am considering coming to Sydney. Have you looked at my blog:

http://art4charity.blogspot.com

I‘ve put up some of my ideas there. It would be great to hear any ideas you have or to receive comments on the ideas I have. I’m hoping artists interested will exchange ideas here and together we should be able to come up something do-able. I’ve just had another idea Idea : A group of artists, with the help of the community could create a giant picture which would then be cut up into a puzzle for the community to piece together? ‘World’s Biggest Puzzle!’ Crazy? Hmm must look that one up in the world record book.

Kim you’re artwork is so vibrant and buzzing with energy. I love seascapes and the way you’ve captured the movement of the water. I’m not very good when it comes to capturing water, but you and Dave are great role models! Feel free to add my email to your mailing list.

Idea I just wonderd if artists interested in getting involved, perhaps you could add the blog link to your websites (and I'll return the favour) Might help spread the word perhaps???
