That's right, it's legalized theft and the changes in copyright law that allow it are under consideration right now in the US & UK. They will no doubt spread elsewhere if the Big$$$ US corporations get their way.

This isn't a vague, minor threat; it's the threat of wholesale legal appropriation of any artist's work without any compensation.

Thanks for drawing our atttention to this Omphaloskeptic. It's an important issue that we need to be aware of. I'm curious as to why we haven't heard more about it?

Sadly I can see it having huge fall out in more ways than the obvious threat to livelihoods. I've enjoyed what the internet offers us in terms of accesssibility to art, but I can see this resulting in considerable anxiety to artists who might become less inclined to share art via forums, blogs and websites.

To give these policy makers their due though, art theft is a problematic issue particularly with the easy accessibility offered by the internet. Something obviously needs to be done to offer artists more protection. I don't know what the answer is, but I certainly don't want to see some private company seeing it as a way to line the pockets of their fat cats. I'd kind of like to see the other side to this story.

Thanks for showing this, I've read the link, & feel quite shocked to think this could happen Shocked .
this means they could then take anybodys photo's - pictures etc. & use!
They wouldn't have to buy / hire photographers, artists etc, just trawl the internet & help themselves Mad
I'm surprised it hasn't been made more public, as it will affect everyone, even family photo's won't be safe !
It doesn't say much for indviduals rights, does it !, & just think how many will be out of work ! & if you do still keep creating pictures, & can't afford to register them in several differant places, then you are just giving them away to these big companys to line their pockets. Evil or Very Mad

I was reading about this on another message board, and apparently this bill died in 2006 and no one has tried to bring it back since.
