Mosmon Art Prize 2007
Saturday 28 July 2007 – Sunday 26 August 2007

The Mosman Art Prize is the oldest, local government art award in Australia, offering an acquisitive ‘painting’ prize of $20,000, sponsored by Mosman Council, the Allan Gamble Memorial Art Prize of $3,000, the Viewers’ Choice Prize of $1,000, a Commendation Prize of $1,000, and a Young Emerging Artist’s Award of $1,000.

Many artists have boosted their careers through winning the prize and continue to submit new works each year. The Mosman Art Prize attracts a diverse and accomplished field of professional and amateur artists from all over Australia. Artists who have won the Mosman Art Prize include Margaret Olley (who won the inaugural prize in 1947), Guy Warren, Grace Cossington Smith, Weaver Hawkins, Nancy Borlase, Lloyd Rees, Elisabeth Cummings, Tim Johnson, Guan Wei and Lucy Culliton. The 2006 Mosman Art Prize was won by Dongwang Fan.

For many of these winning artists the Prize provided inspiration and encouragement to press on with their work, giving them recognition, and more often than not, crucial financial assistance. With his prize money, Guy Warren was able to travel to London to continue his art studies and Lucy Culliton was able to build her studio.

Past adjudicators also include notable Australian art figures such as Margaret Preston, John Olsen, Tim Storrier, Jenny Sages, Edmund Capon and John McDonald.

The 2007 Mosman Art Prize will be judged and opened by Deborah Edwards, Senior Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Thanks Redsy. You are right, I was humbled by the catalogue of artists.

Here's the results

The 2007 Mosman Art Prize winner, James Powditch, Commendation Prize winner, Paul Ryan, Allan Gamble Memorial Art Prize winner, Peter O’Doherty, and Young Emerging Artist Prize winner, Laura Jones.

Works I liked were, Wendy Sharpe, Jasper Knight, and Peter O’Doherty. But there's plenty of other great stuff, it's a good strong show and well worth a visit.

You can never know which way the judges will go hey! I think the works won all had innovation or skill. However I was a little suprised at Peter O'Doherty's (See Link for his image) http://www.mosman.nsw.gov.au/news/2007/07/27/2007-art-prize-winners

To me its soo Howard Arkey and has been done. There is not much variation. Sorry if this sounds too harsh, I just think someone else could of won for their "uniqueness".
