Howdy Forum,
So i recently had my Art Exhibit and i realised that nothing sold, besides 2 small prints. I realised its because i have no real presence and also my work is slightly immature. (not like farts and stick figures, but rather teens just standing around). I have been thinking about trying to increase my Local presence. So I've been thinking about approaching some local stores like: pubs, cafes/teahouses/book stores/furniture stores/hairdressers etc.
i had one idea:
Walk in to a cafe, nicely dressed and talking to a manager/owner about it and giving them a 6 page A5 booklet, with a bit about me and lots of my art. and contact info.
But Im not sure how to go about it. i was wondering if anyone could help me out? |

I don't really know what to say except keep on making your pictures.
Try painting on canvas...and don't give up the more you paint the better you will get.
I don't know how old you are but as you get older your tastes will change and so will your subject matter.
If you're not at art school already then I strongly suggest that you give that some thought.
If you can't get to art school then your local library is another good place to read about other artists and broaden your horizons. |

I think for the majority of artists there is nothing easy about making or selling art, i think you definitelly have talent but you are working in an area that is crowded out with talent so you have either got to work really hard to get to the top of that genre or come up with something entirely new and original.
Have a look at Del Kathryn Barton ABC1 TV Tuesday June22....10:00 PM |

Well of course you could do that, and you might even get someone agreeing to put your work on their walls.
But will it achieve anything? I doubt it. People go to those places to eat, get their hair cut, buy furniture etc and the owners / managers/ staff are not art dealers and are not likely to assist you in building your profile. Most prints on walls of places like these are just background decoration and little more (no matter the quality of the work) so chances that customers will be blown away enough to think about asking who did them and how to contact the artists...also pretty slim.
Some cafes etc actually try to operate as cafe / galleries and these are a bit different.
I agree with Mike and Tango. Personally I think trying to build the work is more important, initially than building a profile. |

Partly agreed, artwork's popularity is based on the artwork quality itself. But without promotion, no one would know the grear artwork that pained by the artist.. |

I'm not suggesting for a moment that promotion is not important. But rather that any promotion should be carefully targeted so that there is some benefit in the particular opportunity being pursued.
I also think effort spent in promotion comes a very distant second to effort spent in creating, developing and honing one's work. |

I agreed what Amandav said. The inner quality of artwork will get more focus from the public. What I said befort , the promotion is based on those high-quality artwork firstly... |

I managed to get a fruit shop/cafe to put up a series of paintings of mine. I had a price, my name and contact details attached to the works. I have unfortunately not sold anything, and it doesn't really seem like I will, but it is really nice to have my works actually doing something as opposed to sitting in storage. I suggest you aproach whoever you can, because just having your work displayed can be really motivating.
P.S. I just walked into the shop and told them I had some works I would like to display and they said to bring them in. So just give it a go |
