IMAGE COPYRIGHT
Protecting artists copyright with images online

Some artists are concerned with putting images of their artwork online for fear that it may be copied or otherwise reproduced. Copyright issues are very hard to address when it comes to the internet and there are no full proof measures that can totally prevent somebody from obtaining the image you have placed online.

Nothing is full proof but there are some common things you can do to try and prevent people from copying your artwork, such as:

  • Size Consideration - Only present images that are 72dpi this is the maximum a computer screen can display images anyway higher dpi is really for printing. At 72 dpi, keep the dimensions less than 600pixels wide. See: Image Tips
  • Water Marking - When creating the image place your name, a copyright date, or your website url across part of the image. Fade it out so its not to obtrusive to the viewer.
  • Right Click Prevention - Whilst this will stop some people from saving your image, a lot of experienced internet users, certainly web designers will know other ways they can reference the image and save it.
The best way to protect your images is by implementing all of the above. Overall though, please try not to loose sleep over copyright! Most people are respectful to an Artists work and if they have a commercial use for your artwork they will contact you and seek permission to use it.
