PROMOTIONAL FLYERS
Sending invitations, postcards or brochures to your mailing list

A must have for any artist preparing an art exhibition. You or your gallery will need to design & produce; Invitation Flyers, DL Flyers, Postcards or Brochures and then post them to your Art Mailing List - your friends, family and most importantly prospective buyers.

Common invitation sizes:
DL flyers, are 1/3 of an A4 ( 210mm x 99mm ) and often printed on card stock. These seem to be the standard art exhibition invitation. They are a standard size fitting a standard post envelope. Postcards (150mm x 100mm ) are also a popular choice often having a similar cost, but requiring no envelope.

Invitation design tips:
Whatever form of printing you choose as your promotional flyer it's important that it gets your message across. Information included will often be;

  • Artist's Name, Exhibition Name, Exhibition Description
  • Opening Night - day & times. Exhibition dates - days & times
  • Gallery Name, Location, Phone, Website & Email
Make your invitation count, give an idea of what work you'll have at the Exhibition, but don't show the whole lot, remember an invitation is meant to spark interest not give away the ending.

Who can design your exhibition invitations
Any graphic designer will have the skills to help you and some will be able to give you a set price for standard items such as DL Flyers and Postcards as long as you provide them with a sketch indicating clearly what you want and high-resolution images of your artwork on CD.

Where to get exhibition invitations printed
With a professionally designed invitation ready for print you may want to research online the various online printers where you can simply upload your design, make a payment and they'll arrive in the post a few weeks later. Although, if it's your first time doing this it may be worth while visiting your local printer without shopping around. Personal attention should ensure you get the desired result and can learn about the choices too. Printing invitations on flimsy paper, rather than card stock is a common first time mistake.

Distributing your invitations & flyers
If your exhibition is held at a gallery, generally they will produce your exhibitions invitations themselves and post them to their mailing list and yours. If you are self-representing yourself the best way to send your invitations is by keeping a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet for your 'contacts list', you can them import it into Microsoft Word and use the 'print address labels' function. Label stickers that fit a standard home printer are available from any newsagency. This may take a little time to initially set up but overall it will save you time and present you more professionally.
